BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense details of Maple Kaede Honjou life character and personality
Maple/Kaede Honjou:
Maple is a complete novice to this game, and in her effort to avoid injury, she invests all her status points into defense, which leaves her slow, frail, and struggling to acquire new abilities at the start of the game. As she progresses through the game, she acquires valuable skills that not only aid her but also frustrate the developers, who have no means of thwarting her progress.
Kaede is a curious and somewhat airheaded girl who unintentionally acquires overpowered skills through unconventional methods, such as devouring a dungeon boss. She primarily wields a great shield and focuses solely on defense, making her avatar almost impervious to damage but incredibly sluggish due to her low AGI stat.
Later on in the game, after the introduction of guilds, Kaede becomes the guild master of Maple Tree at the request of her friend Sally. She also ranked third in the first event of New World Online.
Maple had no prior experience with this game, so she prioritized defense over offense to avoid getting injured. This made her slower and weaker initially, and it made it harder for her to acquire new skills. However, as she progressed through the game, she developed valuable abilities that proved advantageous and frustrating to the creators, who were unable to impede her progress.
Kaede is a carefree girl known for her forgetfulness and love for fun. She isn't very competitive and doesn't hold grudges against anyone, viewing most people as potential friends. Her friendly attitude has allowed her to befriend many of the top players, including Kasumi, Payne, and Mii.
Despite her absent-mindedness, Kaede is often clumsy, as demonstrated when she accidentally bit her tongue during a live broadcast, causing her to feel embarrassed. This tendency also carries over to the real world, where she unconsciously exhibits habits she developed in-game.
Kaede can be reckless at times, especially when she first started playing. She allocated all her status points to defense not because of her forgetfulness but rather because she doesn't like to experience pain, as she stated in her titular phrase, "I don't like to get hurt, so I'll put all of my status points into defense." However, she is a quick thinker and usually makes sensible decisions, even if they seem unusual, like when she tried to clear the Hydra dungeon by herself.
While not adept at combat, Kaede finds it challenging to attack other in-game entities, including other players, as she dislikes causing pain. However, when necessary, she is willing to fight, as she demonstrated when battling the boss, Silverwing, and the Congregation of the Holy Swords.
Kaede has a fondness for cute items and enjoys collecting rare and limited-edition items that she finds interesting or useful. She also enjoys participating in special promotions.
Maple/Kaede Honjou Past
Kaede is an ordinary girl who has a friend named Risa who is a gamer. Risa had been persistently introducing different games to Kaede, but none of them interested her until she gave New World Online (NWO) a try.
NWO turned out to be an unforgettable experience for Kaede, and she became completely hooked on it. Her actions in the game were influenced by her real-life dreams and knowledge, which often diverged from standard gamer practices and created a lot of extra work for the game administrators.
Due to her fear of being harmed and her reluctance to dodge, she automatically allocated all of her available skill points to defense (VIT) to reduce or eliminate any potential damage from attacks. This unintentionally led her to discover and take advantage of an undiscovered game mechanic.
Additionally, she selected a job class that complements her chosen attributes and skills, equipping herself with a large shield and a short sword as her primary equipment.
Maple/Kaede Honjou Appearance
Maple has a complexion of fair skin and shoulder-length black hair, which features a short afro. Her eyes are a deep shade of gray.
In the real world, she is often seen wearing a white and pink-striped hoodie and matching shorts that reach her upper thighs.
She wears a white clip as an accessory in both the real and game worlds. The clip is made up of four rhombuses, each facing a cardinal direction, and connected to a presumed diamond-shaped piece, resembling a compass.
Her in-game avatar is a perfect match to her real-life appearance.
After defeating the Hydra, Maple's beginner outfit is replaced by a black suit of armor with red accents. The armor features a crest of a flower and a rose image on the chest piece. Underneath the armor is a red leotard, matching gloves, and thigh-high stockings. The armor's most durable parts are the gauntlets, shin guards, boots, and breastplates. Red mesh fabric covers her body's most exposed parts, but some skin remains visible. Her armor drapes into a cloak-like design with a dark exterior and red underside. She is usually seen carrying her armament, the heavy shield Replica of the Dark Night, which is mostly black with geometrically carved red patterns and a large red gem at its center.
In addition to her shield, Maple also carries an ornate short sword for casting paralysis abilities on her enemies. It is typically kept hidden inside the sheath strapped to her waist.
After defeating another boss in Episode 8, Maple gains a monstrous, black-skinned Atrocity form. This form features four muscular shoulder arms with spiky elbows, four clawed fingers with red handprints, and red leaf-like hair on its back. It also has armored plates on the head, a tail, and a cyan tongue within its mouth. The chest has a redesigned flower, the legs are spiky, and the face is grotesque and alien-like. In the sneak peek for season 2 of Bofuri, she also gains a black tentacle after defeating an unknown octopus monster.
